Influence of crosslink structure on properties in crystallising and non-crystallising Polyisoprenes

ABSTRACT :
Attempts to determine the influence of the nature of the cross-links on the mechanical strength of natural rubber vulcanisates have previously given conflicting results. In this work, natural rubber has been vulcanised at 70”C with a sulphur vulcanising system accelerated by cyclohexylammonium benzothiazole-2-thiolate. Using the propane-2- thioljpiperidine and hexanethioljpiperidine chemical probe reagents in conjunction with extension stress-strain measurements, it has been shown that the vulcanisate networks formed have crosslinks which are very largely (>85%) polysulphidic. Such networks are stronger than those produced by any other vulcanising system and maximum tensile strength is reached at a much higher degree ofcrosslinking.
